Nuisance Wildlife

The New York State Department for Environmental Conservation laws state that native wildlife live where they live, because it is their home. It is important to have patience with our local wildlife residents and to share our space with them. Urban sprawl and development forces wildlife to live, breed, and raise their young in our backyards.

It is the responsibility of animal owners to protect and look after their pets and livestock which can mean keeping them in at night, keeping cats and very small dogs indoors, never leaving them unattended in yards, and taking other precautions necessary to keep them safe.

You can find useful information regarding nuisance wildlife on the NYS DEC website and we strongly encourage you to check those resources first. Please be aware that the Ontario County Humane Society does not remove wildlife or respond to wildlife complaints.

When all other options have been exhausted, or to have wildlife removed from homes, please refer to the following organizations:

Did you know?

NYS law requires all dogs 4 months of age and older to be licensed with your town or city and vaccinated against rabies. Dogs can be licensed with you town or city clerk; it’s easy and affordable! Contact your local clerk for more information.

Why should I license my dog?

  1. Easy identification: Dogs can be easily identified and returned to their owner if they become seperated.

  2. Health & saftey: Because a valid rabies vaccination is required to get a dog license, licensing your pet ensures that your dog is protected agians thte spread of rabies.

  3. It’s the law: If your dog is picked up as a stray and impounded in a shelter facility, you will be required to obtain a dog license. Already having a valid license ensures you are reunited with your pet as quickly as possible.

If you love your dog,
license your dog!
