3927 Stoddard Rd, Canan
On 5/26/24 at about 9:00pm, this office became involved in an animal cruelty investigation after Ontario County Sheriff’s Deputies responded to 3927 Stoddard Road in the Town of Hopewell NY for a separate unrelated complaint involving Mr. Scrivener. At this time, they checked the barn on his property and observed at least five horses standing in 5-6 feet of manure in two separate inside corrals. This manure was so high that the horses could not exit the barn. As they checked the area around the barn several bones were located in another exterior coral that was attached to the barn. After the deputies left this location and concluded their investigation, they reported this incident to this office. As this investigation continued a search warrant was obtained and executed on 5/30/24. At this time the remains of three horses were found in the barn and attached corral. In addition, the hooves of the five horses were found to be to the point they had curled up due to several years of neglect and were not being checked regularly by a veterinarian. The horses did have hay to eat but little water. At this time the five horses were seized and removed from the property. Mr. Scrivener was arrested and charged with Animal Cruelty (5 counts-misdemeanor) and was also charged with Failure to Provide Food/Water to an Impounded Animal (5-counts-misdemeanor). Both were issued an appearance ticket to appear in the Town of Hopewell Court at a later date and released. These horses are being kept at a local livestock business and are being cared for. This incident is not related to the case that took 889 Crowley Road reported on 6/3/24.
Perdue Horse Cruelty Case- Hug a Horse
In honor of the horses we rescued on May 26, 2024, we are running a Hug A Horse campaign to go toward the care of the horses.
On 5/26/2024 at about 8:40 am this office was contacted by the Ontario County Sheriff’s to investigate a possible animal cruelty incident located at 889 Crowley Road in the Town of Farmington, NY. Their office had responded to this location for another incident that led them into a barn on the property.
Once inside the barn they found 4 live horses that appeared to be malnourished and were lacking food and water. In addition, the horse stall they were kept in was filled with 24-30 inches of manure that they had to stand on. The barn had a strong ammonia smell as well as that of a deceased animal. Shortly after entering the barn a full-size horse was found deceased and decomposing in its stall that again was filled with manure and its door was seated shut by manure. Another horse believed to be a foal was found partially covered in the barns exercise area that was covered by a tarp. The barns floor was covered with manure which had plastic wood chips in it that the horses had been chewing on. The water and electricity to the barn was not on. The horses did not have access to the outside, nor were they being cared for by a veterinarian. They were also in need of farrier service for their hooves. The four live horses were seized and removed from this location they are being kept at a local livestock location and being cared for. The remains of the two deceased horses were exhumed and sent to the Cornell Animal Diagnostic Lab for necropsies. Mr. Perdue who is the owner and caretaker of the horses was charged with Cruelty to Animal (4 counts-misdemeanor) and Failure to Provide Food and Water to an Impounded Animal (4 counts-misdemeanor).
More charges are pending as this investigation continues. Mr. Perdue was issued an Appearance ticket to appear in Farmington Town Court at a later date.
